When the man comes around ...

Comet Neowise is delighting several generations, who since the distant comet Hale-Bopp has longed to see such an object crossing the skies ...
These days it is well worth waking up early to observe and photograph ....

And my favorite photo from this year and helped to end the phobia of heights

Comet NEOWISE over Horseshoe Canyon (July 11, 2020)

This is Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over the Horseshoe Canyon formation near Drumheller, Alberta on the night iof July 10-11, 2020, taken about 2 a.m. MDT with the comet just past lower culmination with it circumpolar at this time. Warm light from the rising waning gibbous Moon provides the illumination. The comet’s faint blue ion tail is just barely visible even in the moonlit sky and low altitude. The glow of summer perpetual twilight at latitude 51.5° N still colours the northern horizon despite this being close to the middle of the night.

This is a blend of six 1- and 2-minute exposures for the ground at ISO 800 and 400 stacked to smooth noise, with a single 30-second exposure at ISO 1600 for the sky, all with the 35mm Canon lens at f/2.8 and Canon 6D MkII, with LENR employed on this warm night. Stacked and masked with Photoshop. Topaz DeNoise AI applied to the sky; Topaz Sharpen AI applied to the ground. Construction barriers prevented access to the trail down, which might have made a better image with a cleaner horizon.

Pandy Park, Aberkenfig, South Wales

Lat 51.542 Long -3.593

I was very fortunate to capture this with some noctilucent clouds as an added bonus. Just a lightweight tripod and a compact camera. Then a walk of about 400 hundred metres or so from my home to get a favourable north eastern horizon.

Final image very slightly cropped & levels & curves adjusted with G.I.M.P.

Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE Puts On A Spectacular Show

Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE is the most spectacular comet to grace Northern Hemisphere skies in decades. This image, taken from Mount Wilson in California on July 10, shows a clearly defined ion tail (blue) to complement its brighter dust tail (yellow).

If you haven't yet had a chance to see Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE, I implore you to do so. Right now, and for the next couple days, it will be visible in the northeastern skies just below the star Capella. When it rises just before first light of dawn (when that is depends on your latitude), it's unmistakable and easy to spot. While this image set was going, I could make it out and about a 5-degree tail with the unaided eye (5 degrees is roughly three fingertips held out at arm’s length). It is amazing in a pair of binoculars, and it is the most photogenic celestial scene I have ever photographed.

Comet Rising Over Segesta Temple - Italy

Blend, Stack

Once again the charm of some places in Sicily is indescribable... The Doric temple of Segesta emerges from the dark of the valley! A unique place without any modern inhabitants. Immersed in nature, it seems to rise from time immemorial from the hill on which it was built. Silence and stars accompany once again the search for a dream moment that can allow us to close our eyes and try to relive with fantasy the inhabitant of Segesta. Who knows what the temple was supposed to look like at that time. Maybe illuminated by fireworks along with the village of the ancient city. Its remains can still be seen in the mountain overlooking the temple and on whose top a beautiful Greek theater overlooking the valley was built. Even today the theatre relives its purpose and, during the summer nights, shows are organized and staged ancient representations of Greek and Latin authors. I went to this place with the precise intent of resuming the NEOWISE 2020 comet as it rises behind the temple. In the picture I took several moments of the comet rising above the temple as I wanted to become part of the history of my land. This scenario could be very well taken back in Greece or in one of its ancient colonies. I mean it's not just a place in Sicily but in the entire Mediterranean culture. So the heavenly astro reminds us that we are all one people under one sky!
